Costa Rica 2002

+ sicher  + sauber  + schön (Blumen, Naturschutzgebiete)  + Busverbindungen günstig und pünktlich, aber in der Regel ohne Air Condition

- teuer (1,5 l Wasser 400 crc, 1,5€; Mietauto um 100 $ pro Tag (Allrad))
- Lateinamerika "light"

- kein Nachtleben, ab 22 Uhr tote Hose
- es gibt zwar überall Spaghetti und Pizza, aber kaum Eis (und dann nur Industrie-Eis) und Nachspeisen
- guter Wein fast unerschwinglich, offener Wein selten gut (kleines Glas  ab 800 crc 3-6 $, Flasche ab 5000 crc)
- Taxifahrer oft dubios (wollen ohne Taximeter fahren und mehr verlangen; kennen nahegelegene Lokale nicht ...)
- Restaurants teuer (ab 5000 crc mit Bier) , oft kommt 23% dazu (Service + Steuern)
- Anreise via Miami nervenzermürbend  (komplette Einreise in die USA, Koffer holen, öffnen, neues Check-in auch bei Stopp nur zum Auftanken !!!)

General information on Costa Rica (CR)
CR is "latin america light" and offers a fine landscape with natural resources (hot water spa at the Arenal: see www.tabacon.com), is clean and safe and offers european (almost everywhere you can find pizzerias and spaghetterias), US fast food and some latin american restaurants (mexican or cr). CR cousine offers "gallo pinto" thats rice, beans, cooked bananas and maybe some chicken or shrimps.

Water is expesnive (400 crc = 1,25 $ = 1,5 €), same price is 0,3 l of beer (best is PILSEN, good is Imperial or Bavaria negro), wines are extremly expensive (800-1500 crc/glass) or 5000 - 7000 / bottle in a restaurant. To hire a 4x4 car (Toyota Land Cruiser) with full cover you have to spent 100$ a day, the smaller Terios is about 80$. Cabinas are 10-25$ and are ggod for 2-4 persons, hotels starts at 35$ (single room).
Streets are better then years before, but still are not good. At dry season you dont really need a 4x4, but it is still recommended as these cars do have more groundspace and better absorb damaged or unpaved roads.

ATM machines (Bankomaten Maestro or Visa/Mastercard) exist ins San José, Quepos and the big cities but are not present outside.
The exchange rate of $ is no problem, hotels and restaurant will accept dollars too and give you a correct exchange.

Avoid flights with a stopover at Miami or Orlando (Martinair, Iberia). You have to fill out the full immigration form, customs for, agriculture form, you have to pick up even your checked luggage, open them, you have to check-in again and you get revised and  controlled  in and outside (shoes ...). This procedere may last for 2 1/2 hours and very often causes delays.
So look for real direct flights or stopover outside the USA (Havana, Mexico, ....)

Nightlife is poor, only in San José you dont have to go to bed early.

Nachtrag 2013 - Habe für einige Tage Ende 2012 mit dem Auto aus Nicaragua kommend Costa Rica bereist. Die Grenzkontrollen erinnern an ehemalige DDR-Zeiten, nur dass sie etwas freundlicher sind, die Schikanen sind aber enorm (Schein-Desinfektion des Autos, neue Versicherungsurkunden, Visa für Nicas....)
Die Preise sind enorm und sind auf Schweizer Niveau. Eine grosse Pizza kann schon man 24$ kosten, Hotels in der Tabacon-Gegend  ab 125$.
Inzwischen gehen die Costenos nach Nicaragua!
Inzwischen ist es auch bekannt, wie lästig Flüge über die USA sind, super war jedoch die KLM von Amsterdam nach Panama (in leistbarer Komfort-Klasse). Dort gehts mit der Copa weiter.
